Crypto Unit Converter

Convert between different cryptocurrency denominations for Ethereum and Bitcoin.

Understanding Cryptocurrency Units

Cryptocurrencies use different denominations to represent values ranging from very small to very large amounts. Just as the dollar has cents, cryptocurrencies have their own subunits that make transactions practical at various scales.

Ethereum Units

Ethereum uses a system based on powers of 10, with Wei being the smallest unit. These units are named after prominent figures in computer science and cryptography.

Ethereum Denomination Chart
Unit Value in Wei Value in ETH Named After
Wei 1 0.000000000000000001 Wei Dai (B-money creator)
Kwei 1,000 0.000000000000001 Charles Babbage
Mwei 1,000,000 0.000000000001 Ada Lovelace
Gwei 1,000,000,000 0.000000001 Claude Shannon
Szabo 1,000,000,000,000 0.000001 Nick Szabo
Finney 1,000,000,000,000,000 0.001 Hal Finney
Ether (ETH) 1,000,000,000,000,000,000 1 Base unit

Gwei - The Most Common Unit

Gwei (Gigawei) is the most commonly used unit in Ethereum, especially for gas prices. When you see "gas price: 20 Gwei," it means each unit of gas costs 20 billion Wei. This denomination is practical because gas prices typically range from 1 to 500 Gwei.

Bitcoin Units

Bitcoin has a simpler system but still uses multiple denominations to handle different transaction sizes. The smallest unit, the Satoshi, is named after Bitcoin's pseudonymous creator, Satoshi Nakamoto.

Bitcoin Denomination Chart
Unit Value in Satoshi Value in BTC Common Use
Satoshi (sat) 1 0.00000001 Smallest unit, microtransactions
Microbitcoin (uBTC) 100 0.000001 Small transactions
Millibitcoin (mBTC) 100,000 0.001 Medium transactions
Centibitcoin (cBTC) 1,000,000 0.01 Rarely used
Decibitcoin (dBTC) 10,000,000 0.1 Rarely used
Bitcoin (BTC) 100,000,000 1 Base unit, large transactions

The Satoshi - Bitcoin's Foundation

A Satoshi is the smallest unit of Bitcoin, representing 0.00000001 BTC. With Bitcoin's high value, Satoshis make it practical to price goods and services. For example, if Bitcoin is worth $50,000, one Satoshi equals $0.0005.

Practical Applications

Gas Price Calculations (Ethereum)

When sending an Ethereum transaction, you set a gas limit and gas price. If a transaction uses 21,000 gas at 50 Gwei:

  • Gas cost = 21,000 × 50 = 1,050,000 Gwei
  • Converting to ETH: 1,050,000 Gwei = 0.00105 ETH

Bitcoin Transaction Fees

Bitcoin fees are often displayed in Satoshis per byte (sat/byte). If a transaction is 250 bytes and the fee rate is 10 sat/byte:

  • Total fee = 250 × 10 = 2,500 Satoshis
  • Converting to BTC: 2,500 sat = 0.000025 BTC

Pricing and Commerce

Merchants often price items in mBTC or Satoshis for better readability. Instead of pricing something at 0.00025 BTC, it's clearer to say 0.25 mBTC or 25,000 Satoshis.

Why So Many Units?

Cryptocurrency values fluctuate significantly, and their use cases range from microtransactions to large transfers. Multiple denominations provide:

  • Clarity: Easier to read "20 Gwei" than "0.00000002 ETH"
  • Precision: Avoid rounding errors in calculations
  • Flexibility: Choose appropriate units for different contexts
  • Standardization: Common language for developers and users
