Glue Record Checker

Glue Record Checker

Description, Best Practices & Example Output

What are Glue Records?
Glue records are A (or AAAA) records that are provided in the parent zone to resolve nameservers that are in-bailiwick—that is, when the nameservers are subdomains of the domain itself. For example, if your domain is example.com and your nameservers are ns1.example.com and ns2.example.com, glue records (typically provided by your registrar) prevent a circular dependency when resolving these nameservers.

How This Tool Works:
- The tool retrieves NS records for your domain.
- It determines if each nameserver is in-bailiwick (ends with your domain name).
- For in-bailiwick nameservers, it performs an A record query to check for glue records.
- For external nameservers, glue records are not required.

Example Output:

Nameserver: ns1.example.com
Glue Record: 192.0.2.10

Nameserver: ns2.example.com
Glue Record: 192.0.2.11

Nameserver: ns1.externalsvc.net
Glue Record: Not required (external nameserver)

Best Practices:
- If your nameservers are within your domain (e.g., ns1.example.com for example.com), ensure that valid A (or AAAA) records (glue records) are present to break the circular dependency in DNS resolution.
- If glue records are missing for in-bailiwick nameservers, your domain may fail to resolve properly at the parent level.
- Review your registrar settings to ensure that glue records are correctly configured when necessary.

This comprehensive check helps you safeguard domain resolution and maintain proper DNS operation by ensuring that all required glue records are in place.
