Why This Matters & Usage Tips
The alt attribute serves two crucial purposes:
-
SEO: Search engines use alt text to understand what your image represents, especially if
it can’t be read by crawlers. Well-crafted alt text can boost relevance for related keywords.
-
Accessibility: Screen readers rely on alt text to describe images to visually impaired users,
making it essential for an inclusive website.
General Guidelines:
- Provide a concise, descriptive alt text that accurately represents the image content.
- Avoid keyword stuffing or overly long alt text.
- If the image is purely decorative, an empty alt (e.g.,
alt=""
) can be appropriate.
But do so intentionally.
- Don’t leave the alt attribute out entirely. Even if empty, it’s better to have
alt=""
than no alt attribute at all.
Steps to Use:
- Enter the full URL of your page (e.g.,
https://www.example.com/gallery
).
- Click "Check Images." The tool lists all `
` tags, showing whether each has alt text, an empty alt attribute, or no alt attribute at all.
- Copy the results for your records or share them with your dev team to fix or improve alt attributes.
